Cryptocurrency evangelists celebrated what they called a big step forward on Thursday, after a Securities and Exchange Commission official held out the prospect of exempting certain digital assets from its supervision. Since the explosive growth in the market for initial coin offerings — which have raised almost $14bn for blockchain-backed businesses — the SEC has taken a hard line: any cryptocurrency offered through an ICO should be treated as a security, and thus subject to existing laws on disclosures and other investor protections……
